The boy who forgot to
be afraid
Dick was clever boy. But he could not learn to
swim no mater hard he tried, his friends had al tried to teach him, but one by
one, they gave up trying because Dick just could not do it.
Poor Dick. He felt very sad when he watched the
other children splashing about in the water.
One day, Dick went fishing by the riverside. He
sat down under the shade of a big tree on the bank of the river, The tree was
so huge that its branches spread over the river. Soon Dick heard chirping
noises above him. He looked up and saw a nest of birds. The mother bird was
teaching her young baby birds to fly.
Suddenly, one of the baby birds fell out of the
nest into the river below. The mother bird chirped loudly and flew down to the
water. But she could not help her baby bird.
Without thinking, Dick jumped into the river to
save the bird. He did not remember that he could not swim. He moved his arms
and legs wildly and to his surprise, he found that he did not sink. He was
actually swimming, although he made a lot of splashing noises.
The skinny goat
Years ago,
there lived a farmer in the New Territories. He was a very kind man and also
hard working. Besides being a farmer, he kept a few goats so that he would have
goat’s milk to sell.
One day, while
he was looking after his goats on the hill-side, an old man passed by. The old
man stopped and looked at the goats.
“Will you
sell this goat to me?” asked the old man, pointing to the skinniest goat.
“Tell me,
why do you want this thin goat? It is so bony that it will not even make a good
meal, “said the farmer.
“Oh, no, I
am not going to eat it. “The old man explained.
“I just
want to get the magic candle that is inside its stomach. When this magic candle
is burnt, gold and silver will come flying around its flame.”
When the
farmer heard that, he refused to sell the goat. That night. He quickly took the
goat home and killed it. To his delight, he really saw a candle inside the
goat’s stomach. He quickly lit the candle and everything happened just as the
old man had said. Soon, gold and silver coins came flying through the window
into the house and around the flame.
A least
when the candle burnt out, the money fell on the floor. So the farmer became
rich and lived in comfort for the rest of his life.
