Apa itu Word Classes

Hi everyone, in this nice occasion, I would like to discuss the term of word classes. As I cited from a book entitled How to teach vocabulary by Scott Thornburry, the word classes are divided into several classes:

1.       Nouns

A word that refers to a person, place, thing, substances or quality

2.       Pronouns

A word that is used instead of a noun or a noun phrase

3.       Verbs

A word or phrase that describes an action, condition or experience

4.       Adjectives

A word that describes a noun or pronoun

5.       Prepositions

A word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

6.       Conjunctions

A word such as and, but, while etc that connects words, phrases, sentence and clause in a sentence

7.       Determiner

A word that is used before a noun to show which particular example of the noun you are referring to

Moreover, in terms of the meaning associated with these word classes, we can make a crude division into two groups:

1.       Grammatical words (function words): prepositions, conjunctions, determiners and pronouns

2.       Content words: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs
