Teaching Degree of Comparison

Degree of comparison is one of material that is learned by Indonesian learners. Indonesian English teachers should understand how to teach it. Here is my experience that I can share to all English teachers (Indonesian) as reference.

1.Teacher introduces the basic of adjectives.

Adjective is an example of parts of speech. So, teacher should expose as many as possible of adjectives.

2.Teacher introduces the comparative and superlative forms for one of syllable adjective.

Teacher should explain about one syllable adjectives, such as tall, big, small etc. To elaborate, teacher can use an illustration, for example; inviting students who have different heights.

1. Edo is 160 height

2 .Aldo is 165 height

3. Aldi is 170 height

4. Aldo is taller than Edo

5. Aldi is the tallest of the three.

6. Edo is shorter than Aldo.

3.Teacher introduces two or more syllable adjective

Teacher explain to students the example of two or more syllable adjective, such as; dangerous, beautiful. Diligent etc. Teacher shows pictures, for example:

1.Ampera bridge in Palembang is beautiful

2.Suramadu bridge is more beautiful than Ampera.

3.The toll road in Jambi is the most beautiful among the three.

Note:

1.As English as a foreign language, in my point of view, teacher use the native language (Indonesian language) in order to make it easier for learners to understand.

2. If not, teacher can use fully English, however there should be more examples or exposure, drilling. We can use real things, pictures or else
